Chinese String Eggplant Seeds

This eggplant was a part of our eggplant trial which was cut short by the hurricanes of 2024. One of the traits of this eggplant that makes it unique is that it’s very early bearing, several weeks ahead of anything else in our trial. This meant that before the hurricane blew the trial over, we still got to learn about the early production. Our second round with Chinese String in 2025 was very impressive, giving huge yields and early production demonstrated again. This eggplant is extremely tender and delicate to eat. After observing all of these traits in one variety, we made the decision to offer this variety in our seed catalogue. We originally acquired the seed from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds who introduced it into the seed trade.

Our plants took a quick dive when the true heat of summer set in. However, before this the sheer weight of the production pulled the plants over, weakening the roots and allowing intense sun to burn the inner parts of the plant. This variety is an excellent choice for Spring and Fall gardening, but we don’t know yet how well it may perform in summer without the issues mentioned above coinciding with the heat. Consider a stake when setting in transplants because the plants falling over with fruit weight can be a real issue. This may be less of a problem if the eggplants are continually harvested young for food. Since we were growing a seed crop, all the fruit was left to develop to full size.  We will update this listing with more information as we get more experience with this eggplant.
