NS1 Jackfruit Seeds

We are offering fresh jackfruit seeds from the NS1 strain. We say “strain” rather than variety as it seems many people have grown NS1 seedlings and it’s unclear who really grows the original grafted clone and how many generations away from the original any particular tree may be. NS1 is an older jackfruit in Florida that tends to give growers consistent results in our subtropical climate when grown from seed. This fruit of the particular tree these seeds come from is quite good, but perhaps not as good as some of the newer exotic “top tier” varieties that do not have the same proven track record for durability to our climate. We are opting to plant workhorse jackfruits like NS1 here at Cody Cove Farm. NS1 seedlings seem to consistently give strong trees with nice fruit, according to a number of growers. This seed was grown in Polk County and took 3 years from planting to yield a good number of fruits. Fruits are of good flavor and have a nicely filled out shape.

In conversation with African tropical fruit specialist Paul Noren, we learned that NS1 seedlings were the only strain that thrived of a number of varieties taken to an area with a long, harsh dry season in Congo. Given NS1’s track record in Florida, this anecdote lends to the idea that NS1 may lean a little more subtropical with some moderate adaptation to drought and cold.

This listing is for 20 seeds. Jackfruits germinate at nearly 100 percent. If you wish to have just one or two trees, we recommend planting all of these seeds in pots and selecting the strongest out for planting. Gardeners may even consider planting several near each other in the ground to later further select for an especially vigorous individual from the group to keep. Seeds are fresh from the fruit and will be mailed in a plastic bag with lightly moist potting soil to maintain viability in transit. Seeds should be planted ASAP upon arrival. We recommend planting seeds directly into one gallon pots.
