Koba is a perennial dividing onion from Hawaii. Several years ago we seeded a number of Allium fistulosum varieties that we thought would have good chances of being perennial, green year round and highly dividing in our Florida garden. All of the Allium fistulosum varieties survived several years but Koba showed the highest amount of dividing. The dividing trait is very convenient because new plants can be started by simply teasing apart a cluster, rather than having to start small seeds in a tray an grow them through the tedious adolescent stage. Koba is very easy to tease apart and make lots of new plants quickly.
Koba is green and ready to harvest year round in Florida, though it does get a little haggard at the height of the summer heat and humidity. This green onions tastes great and the stem portion is thick and useful in cooking, closer to a bulb onion than the green tops. To save your own seed, we recommend maintaining a number of clones instead of one plant divided repeatedly. Alliums are outcrossers, meaning it is best if plants can receive pollen from a genetically different plant. Otherwise, they can suffer inbreeding depression and generate weak seedlings.
This is a great onion to have around in the Florida garden and we are excited to learn more about it as we scale up our plantings. You can learn more about this onion in our video on perennial onions.
We have a very limited amount of seed so each pack will only contain 20. As we increase our stock we will offer larger volumes of seed.
