Bolivian Tomato – Seeds

Bolivian tomato is a promising yellow cherry tomato we think will be a winner for many Florida gardeners and people in other hot, humid environments. This variety stood out in our Spring 2026 tomato trial for high disease resistance. Out of over 30 varieties, Bolivian was the last one with any healthy foliage that continued to ripen some edible fruit as the punishing Florida July weather set in (other than Everglades tomato). The plants show a very impressive degree of resistance to tomato foliar diseases.

We rank Bolivian as “medium” for productivity compared to other cherries in our trial. The plants produced plenty of fruits, though not with the extreme generosity seen in some others. Production starts mid-season (for cherries) and carries on well past lots of other tomatoes as the resilience of the vines allows them to keep making fruit. The flavor of the fruit is good and somewhat unique. It would be easy to see how some people might mark this a favorite while others may prefer different tomatoes. The fruit is not subject to cracking and is generally blemish free. This is a highly rampant indeterminate plant that needs a large trellis or plenty of room to run. At the end of our trial this variety had swallowed up areas where adjacent varieties had crashed, becoming a mini tomato jungle unto itself.

Bolivian tomato seems to be a slightly unstable landrace that has been shared around with different names. We got plants with different sized and shaped fruit. These different forms seem to be simply mutations on the same variety, as the flavor and internal color were the same between plants. There are different names associated with this tomato (or very closely related tomatoes). We have simplified the name to “Bolivian” since the different shapes and sizes in our population would render all the other adjectives that are often attached wrong anyways. We have ordered this tomato from other sources to compare. Provided these come out similarly, in the future we will include that seed to increase the genetic diversity customers receive in an order. Our current seed packs include seeds from plants with different sizes and shapes.

Though the fruit is plenty good, there are all kinds of good tasting cherry tomatoes. The primary reason we have chosen to carry Bolivian tomato in our catalogue is the high degree of disease resistance it showcased on our farm. We hope that gardeners who struggle with tomatoes in hot, wet places may be able to succeed with this seed.

Please note that our writings reflect only the experiences of one season and we may learn new things in the future that change our thoughts on this tomato. Regarding seed purity, please note that our tomato varieties are grown in close proximity as we do not have the growing space to isolate them from each other. Tomatoes are inbreeding, typically pollinating themselves and staying true to type. However, in some regions of the country certain insects may occasionally move a little pollen around and generate crosses with other nearby tomatoes. It is generally understood that this happens in very minuscule amounts with tomato, which is why we feel comfortable offering this seed. The worst case scenario is that you get a plant of Bolivian crossed with other rare, heat tolerant tomatoes from our farm. Please consider mailing us back seeds from the hybrid if this happens!
