Dwarf Namwah has made itself well known in Florida gardening circles for being exceptionally well adapted to our subtropical growing conditions as well as producing delicious little bananas.  This variety originates in Thailand.  Dwarf Namwah is very tolerant of cool conditions and has a short growing cycle.  The pseudostems survive hard freezes, quickly regrowing back into healthy plants.  At Cody Cove Farm this is our favorite fresh eating banana of all and our customers agree that the fruit is top tier.  The fruit has a distinctive chewy texture and an exquisite flavor that is hard to describe.  The frozen fruit makes a delicious ice cream alternative when blended.  When fruits begin to get their first blush of color they can be baked into delicious fries and fully ripe fruits are also wonderful fried like a plantain.  Unlike most bananas, Namwah bananas aren’t ripe until they start to show black speckling.  The skin can turn almost entirely black and fruit is still good inside.

Dwarf Namwah plants are short with thick trunks, maxing out at roughly 10 feet tall.  The plants grow aggressively and produce many pups.  Without management and thinning they can grow into a thicket.  Plants have thick foliage with good resistance to wind and better tolerance of poorer soils than many other bananas.  Fruit yields per pseudostem are moderate with healthy plants typically yielding roughly 25-40 pound bunches under our conditions.  The fruit is small, maybe half the size of a grocery store banana.  They’re a perfect snack sized fruit in our opinion.  An all around good option for Florida home gardeners.
