This was a project inspired by garden landrace extraordinaire Joseph Lofthouse. His concept of landrace gardening is to grow a wide diversity of varieties and to let them cross, every season selecting for the most regionally adapted plants. This is a wide mix of bush type Phaseolus vulgaris dry bean varieties that we have been selecting for several years. It was remarkable in the first year how some varieties did wonderfully while others didn’t even survive. In the following years, the beans have been contributing to the mix according to their productivity. Starting with this level of diversity increases the chance that some will be well adapted to your particular garden conditions. Thus far we have not observed much crossing going on between the bean types. Only those that have produced well and dried down without molding have stayed in the mix. Phaseolus vulgaris performs best in Florida in well cared for garden conditions in the Fall and Spring season.
To us, this rainbow of beans is like harvesting jewels. Each variety has a deeply rooted history reaching back to some people who faithfully saved the best seeds every year. We feel a deep connectedness and beauty to seeing them all grow together in one garden and to see such an obvious visual representation of the genetic diversity that exists in the world.
This listing if for ~1oz of seeds. Phaseolus vulgaris.
