A Note About Shipping Our Banana Pups
We ship freshly dug banana pups from our plants. We only dig healthy sword suckers with strong potential to grow into healthy banana plants upon arrival. Most businesses selling banana plants sell tissue cultured plants that do not have the large corm that ours have. These are a superior form of planting material that will establish much faster because of the stored energy in the corm. Due to the nature of this fresh digging, every pup is a little different than the next. We trim the roots off of pups which seem to die in the transplanting process anyway. The pup will quickly develop new roots upon planting.
Our size options express a range of pup size that customers may receive. Our banana listing details will frequently change to accommodate whatever nature is giving us at the time. Any sold as “scratch and dent” have been scraped up during digging and have some corm damage from the shovel. Bananas are hard to kill and these should do fine, but because they are damaged we offer them at a discounted price. Mini pups are viable planting pieces but definitely need to be potted and cared for to develop them to a nice plant. No matter the pup size, getting the genetics to customers is the goal. With a little effort, customers will turn these small pieces into healthy plants that generate their own pups for expanding.
Unfortunately, shipping is costly with bananas due to their size and heavy weight. Please anticipate high shipping costs before filling up your cart with banana pups. We will be exploring ways to reduce this cost such as offering trimmed pups and consistently digging pups before they reach this size. For this batch of bananas we are offering the coupon code “cutshippingcosts”. If this code is entered, we will trim some of the top of the banana pup down to fit in a smaller box and you will save $8 on shipping costs. Bananas pups readily tolerate this type of pruning typically but we understand many gardeners may want the pristine, full sized pup. Upon arrival, cut surfaces may appear black and slightly rotted at the very top. This can be cleaned up with a fresh cut and new growth will emerge quickly. Customers who choose this option are taking on the risk of rotting and pup loss with no refund unless the pup is obviously rotted or non-viable the day it arrives. We are not offering this for Red Iholene after observing a cut stem of this variety not resprout.
