Akakai Onion – Tropical Dividing Onion – Hawaiian Heirloom – Live Plant

$15.00

This is another fantastic tropical dividing onion kindly shared to us by our friend Chris Hominics. This rare onion originates in Hawaii, making it an ideal candidate for Florida. This onion behaves very much like Florida Finley Onion and may also be a member of the A. cepa aggregatum group. These onions grow from the months of September-May, during which they rapidly multiply into clusters which can be divided for making new plants. In two years, I have been able to turn three tiny bulbs into hundreds of plants through frequent division. In May, the plants go dormant at which point the bulbs are harvested, allowed to dry and put away to store in a shoebox. In September they are replanted.
Akakai onions are eaten like green onions. The greens and the swollen stems at the base make a great vegetable. In good garden conditions, this is an ultra easy onion to grow. If you get it once, you’ll have it forever if you take care of it and put bulbs up for summer.

4 in. potted plant

At this time, this is rare germplasm. We hope in the future the price can come down as we have more material available.
