Asian Black Chewing Sugarcane – Cuttings

For years, we have been hoping to find a soft chewing sugarcane that grows well for us. With this variety, we feel like we found a winner. This sugarcane is very sweet and good tasting, with softer than usual fiber that makes it more gentle on the mouth to chew. Since most people do not have their own sugarcane press, this is the most likely way the cane may be consumed by many gardeners. We allowed some African friends who are seasoned cane chewers to sample this variety, and they agreed on its quality as a chewing type.

We found this cane variety at an Asian produce market after sampling some of the delightful fresh squeezed juice, which takes on a beautiful purple hue from the dark skin. There are other dark colored Asian canes circulated around with supposed high quality for chewing. Barring DNA tests, we have no way of knowing if this variety is identical to these others or not.

This variety has grown well at our location in Central Florida. Generally speaking, sugarcane prefers good soil moisture and fertility with lots of direct sunlight.
