Banana- Red Iholene

We know very little about this banana and haven’t eaten it yet because hurricane Ian knocked over our first stem that was approaching flowering size.  It is a relatively rare banana from Hawaii.  Knowing it is Hawaiian in origin we planted it in a very rich soil location protected from wind where it has grown well.  Leaves have an ornamental copper coloration on the underside.  Flavor reviews are available elsewhere but we can’t personally comment on the fruit quality of a banana we haven’t tasted.  This variety is probably not a top choice for small gardens wanting a proven workhorse banana but an interesting choice for collectors who like to explore the wide world of banana diversity.
