Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea)

This legume is a vigorous climbing vine.  It is primarily appreciated for the beautiful blue flowers which are used to dye teas and food.  The pods and beans are also eaten in some places, but we have not experimented with eating this plant and have grown it simply for the beauty of the flowers.  This is a heat-loving tropical plant which grows well throughout the rainy season in Florida.  It requires a trellis to support the robust, twining vines.  The somewhat crude sense of humor of the scientist who chose the Latin name of this plant will become evident when it begins to flower.
