Cassava – Branca

Branca is a Brazilian cassava variety, translating to “white” in Portuguese.  Some of the root bark is unusually light colored, hence the name.  This variety is new to us so this description is based on limited experience.  In our taste test this ranked highly, with high quality soft root flesh with no bitterness.  Horticulturally, we don’t know a lot about this variety yet but our first year of growth made it seem promising.  This is an exciting variety that we will be planting more of in the future.

We mail a rooted 6 inch potted plant or thick 5 cuttings with densely packed nodes. Due to the variability of plant growth at different times of year, sometimes only thinner cuttings are available.  In these cases we will compensate by including some extras.  In central and north Florida, cassava typically needs to be planted by April to get a good yield within that growing season.  Cuttings ordered out of that season can be grown out by the customer to yield more planting material for future plantings.  Manihot esculenta.
