Cassava – Shan’s Yellow

$13.00

(Please be advised that the best time for cassava planting in most of Florida is springtime. These offerings are for people to get access to the germplasm which they can grow out to use for future plantings or to overwinter in the ground for later harvests.)

Shan’s Yellow is a fantastic yellow fleshed cassava cultivar that originates in India.  This variety is one of the best we have tasted.  It has a distinctive potato-like smell and taste that we think is wonderful with a soft texture.  It cooks very rapidly compared to many other kinds of cassava.  Top-tier, must have variety!  So far it has produced well but we are still learning and evaluating.  The yellow color only presents when cooked and is slightly less yellow than “Manteiga”, another yellow variety we grow.  This yellow flesh may contain increased amounts of beta-carotene/Vitamin A.

In central and north Florida, cassava typically needs to be planted by April to get a good yield within that growing season.  Cuttings ordered out of that season can be grown out by the customer to yield more planting material for future plantings.  Manihot esculenta.
