We received this sugarcane as a fresh eating type (as opposed to a processing type). In many tropical countries, peeled sugarcane is enjoyed as a fresh snack wherein the juicy internodes are chewed and the fiber is spit out. There is variation in juiciness and toughness of fiber that make some varieties more desirable for using as a fresh snack than others. Having not tried eating many types of sugarcane, it is hard to us to make much of a declarative statement on the eating quality of this variety compared to others. An African friend (and sugarcane lover) who tasted it on our farm declared that it was juicy and soft. I recently ate a specialty type from an Asian market that was definitely superior to the Don Cinco I have eaten. We are still learning about sugarcane but for the time being, this is the best we have to offer as a snacking cane variety. There is no reason that this variety cannot also be pressed and made into sugar or sugarcane juice, just like all others.
This variety has grown very well in our Central Florida soils and produces tall, thick canes. Some varieties do not seem to thrive here so there does seem to be variation in adaptability to Florida, perhaps especially the droughtier areas of the state.
Given that sugarcane roots readily, we have decided the most efficient way to offer Don Cinco cuttings is through offering cuttings. Cuttings will have several nodes.
This listing is for 5 cuttings.
