Ficus opposita – Experimental Fig Rootstock – Cuttings

$15.00

Please read our listing for Ficus sycamorus for more information about fig grafting generally.

This is another potential nematode resistant rootstock option for figs in Florida. Unfortunately we don’t have a lot of solid information yet on if this species will be a long term good rootstock. We successfully grafted a fig to this species and the graft has remained alive for maybe two years, That tree is not thriving, but perhaps due to reasons that have nothing to do with the rootstock or graft compatibility (tree is not in a great location and hasn’t gotten the care it deserves).. There was a very old report that this species made a good fig rootstock but it appears little work with it has been done since then. The tree itself has grown very well in our soils and does appear to be resistant to nematodes. It roots easily from cuttings. Importantly, the native range of Ficus opposita sees some cold temperatures. This may be a cold hardier rootstock option than Ficus sycamorus which could be important for colder parts of the state.

For a surefire fig rootstock, we recommend F. sycamorus which has a decades-long proven track record. If you would like to experiment, this species makes an interesting candidate for fig enthusiasts.
