These long beans are extra long! This special variety of yard long bean originates in Guyana and was brought into cultivation by legendary Florida fruit enthusiast Crafton Clift. Crafton promised these long beans could get over 40 inches long and he wasn’t lying. This variety really outdoes itself on the “yard long” claim. For several years now this has been a highly productive long bean variety for us. Long beans are much more heat tolerant and tropical in nature than common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties and are actually a sub-type of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). These beans are enjoyed as a cooked vegetable when tender like a green bean. Leafy greens of all Vigna unguiculata types are also edible.
