This is a new cowpea variety to us and observations are based on the first season of growth. This cowpea is a vigorous climbing type that quickly climbs a trellis and heavily produces pods. The pods we tried cooking as snap beans were too fibrous to enjoy. The beans therefore are best shelled out like black eyed peas or allowed to dry down. The pods seem to be very clean and the seeds dry down nicely with a very low percentage of bad/damaged seed. We don’t know yet if this variety is resistant to cowpea curculio and how well the seeds dry down during heavy rain periods. Indian Cowpea came to us from Paul Zmoda, a great fruit collector and educator from the Tampa area. It apparently originated in India. We still have a lot to learn about this variety and hope to hear feedback about its merits and downsides from customers.
