This is the roselle variety that we have grown since maybe 2012. It has been reliable and highly productive grown under Central Florida conditions with low input and no irrigation after establishment. The calyxes are large and fleshy. The plants grow very upright and do not tend to flop down on the ground like the “Early Roselle” variety we offer. Production begins at least a month after the earlier variety but it is more indeterminate, with new blooms and calyxes being formed over a long period from Fall into early Winter.
Roselle is primarily grown for the edible calyxes which are used to make teas, jams and all other sorts of products. In some Asian and African cuisine the cooked greens are an important food item. This plant is appreciated in a wide diversity of tropical cultures for its diverse uses. It is an extremely easy to grow crop in Florida, tolerating poor soils and drought.
