This mint came from a friend who did a mint trial and found this to be the most durable variety for Florida. It has stuck around for us for more than 5 years, enduring the Florida summers when most varieties die. Our friend believes this is likely “Ricola” mint but we will call it Mint #1 until we are able to confirm it is the same as Ricola. This mint is delicious, with a bold aroma and flavor we would describe as closest to peppermint. We greatly prefer the eating quality of this mint to “mojito mint”, the other mint variety we have found to reliably survive Florida summers. Every so often this mint needs to be rejuvenated and replanted in new areas or it will fizzle out. Provided it gets some occasional replanting, it survives Florida conditions over the long haul. Plants perform well in very rich garden soil and especially well in pots. It does not do well in dry, neglected areas of the garden. Plants are at peak performance for the cooler period of the year and more marginal in the midst of the extreme heat. Healthy plants form a thick mat of rhizomes under the soil.
We ship 4 inch potted plants, or a hearty bundle of bare-root stem and rhizome tissue, bagged with moisture to ensure survival during shipping. Bare-root rhizomes can be coiled up into small pots and buried. Within days these rhizomes begin sprouting into mint plants.
