Peruvian White Guava has been the most vigorous and productive variety of guava out of ~6 clonal varieties planted at Cody Cove.  The fruit is of good quality with a nice texture and a lot of the fruits avoid fruit fly penetration, though some are damaged.  Vigor may be explained by higher resistance to root knot nematodes than others.  Fruit is produced several times throughout the year, especially with good care and regular tip pruning.  For true to type guavas in the nursery industry and orchards they must be grafted or grown from air layers.  However, we have had great success with guava seedlings in the past, having them fruit within 2-3 years, and producing good quality fruit.  We expect fruit quality and tree growth to be similar to the parent tree but not identical.  Guavas are grown from seed throughout the world and feral guava populations prove that seedling trees often produce good fruit.  A lecture can be found on Youtube from a grower in the California Rare Fruit Growers group who has large populations of guava trees all grown from seed who insists that seed grown trees are usually excellent.  We are planting seedlings of this variety on our farm because seedling trees have taproots and can produce very vigorous trees.  These are not clones of Peruvian White but are a cheap way to start out with good genetics with high likelihood of a tree that is vigorous and productive under Florida conditions.
