This variety is new to us but we are extremely impressed with its performance on our farm.  True plantains are considered by many to be a real challenge in Florida.  This variety grew very well under our conditions and produced a bunch of roughly 40 pounds of impressive plantains.  The cooked plantains are just like commercial type plantains from the store, delicious fried and baked.  Based on our promising initial observations, we will be scaling up our plantings.  This variety was brought to the mainland US by fruit collector/extraordinaire Bill Whitman.

Puerto Rican Dwarf is very short and stout with a thick trunk and vibrantly green foliage.  Literature has called this a cold sensitive variety but on our farm it had no issues at nearly freezing temperatures.  The pupping behavior of this variety is strange, with none appearing until the bunch of fruit is already developing.  After that, a ring of many small pups comes up around the base all at once.  Many of these probably need to be thinned out to allow one or two to dominate and produce fruit.  In Florida, cooking bananas such as Orinoco are common and may be erroneously called plantains.  It is important to note that this variety is not a cooking banana but a true plantain with the eating quality that makes them beloved throughout the tropics.
