Aji Sazonar Pepper

$5.00

Aji Sazonar is a seasoning pepper from Cuba. This comes from the species Capsicum frutescens, the Tabasco pepper group. The most perennial, disease resistant pepper varieties in Florida such as “grove pepper” are from this group.

Aji Sazonar is one of the most perennial types of peppers we have grown. Plants have lived for 4 years, not under irrigated conditions and have even resprouted from the roots after freezes to continue growing. Peppers are produced throughout most of the year. The plant is large, woody and upright. The peppers are not hot but in our approximation not ultra delicious, but acceptable for cooking into dishes. They lack much flavor and have thin walls. However, these are worth growing as they are the most strongly perennial non-pungent pepper of all of the varieties we have tried. Many gardeners may appreciate the fruits as is but this may also provide valuable parentage for breeding new perennial sweet pepper forms by crossing with high quality fruited forms of Capsicum annuum or C. chinense – project we hope to pursue.
